Keep Your Patio Furniture In Shape

All sorts of materials are used to make patio furniture these days, from the least expensive resin furniture to high-quality teak and wrought iron patio furniture. To protect your investment, whatever it is, you should seasonally check and repair as necessary your patio furniture.

Wooden furniture can dry out or mildew from exposure to weather. A good quality exterior penetrating oil is the best treatment for redwood or cedar patio furniture-both woods that are generally weather-resistant. Teak patio furniture needs different treatment. Teak furniture can literally live outdoors on your patio for years, thanks to the high oil and rubber content of teak. Many products meant for other types of wood patio furniture can actually deplete teak’s natural oils, so make sure you use products that are especially meant for the teak furniture on your patio.

Wrought iron patio furniture can rust. Naval jelly is the best thing for removing the rust spots from patio furniture; if the surface has gotten rough, once the rust is removed you can sand the wrought iron. Be sure to use paint to touch up any exposed spots or it will rust again. If wrought iron furniture seems wobbly, some of its joints may need to be re-welded.

Aluminum patio furniture may also need joints re-welded from time to time. Most aluminum furniture can be cared for with the same products used to clean cars, and clear car wax can provide a good protective finish for aluminum outdoor furniture. Aluminum outdoor furniture that has been painted can be touched up with acrylic spray paint.

Plastic or resin patio furniture can be touched up with spray paint made for plastic; you can find it in home improvement stores and in art supply stores. Vinyl cleaners and vinyl protectants, such as those used for car upholstery, are good for using on resin outdoor furniture.

And don’t forget to check the feet of your outdoor furniture. If the glides that come on most metal furniture come off, as the furniture scrapes against the ground it can chip; that will let in rust. Glides can also crack and break with age. Replacements can often be found at home stores or ordered online.

How to Keep Your Furniture Clean in Four Simple Steps

For many people, their furniture is one of the most prized possessions that they have. The sofa and other various items that comprise the living room are often the center piece and the focal point for guests that we invite into the home. With this knowledge it is unsurprising that most people spend a lot of time preserving their furniture to not only keep the home looking good but also to maintain its value. This article will address some of the key actions that you should take if you to want to clean and maintain the furniture in your home.

Perhaps the most important reason for keeping the furniture clean is the effects that they have on the quality of air within the home. Dust, mold and other bacteria can all build up over time if the furniture is not cleaned on a regular basis. Inevitably this can be the cause of health problems within the home, particularly if you have young children and elderly or ill relatives.

So with this in mind, what should you do to keep the furniture clean?

The first thing that you should do with your furniture is to position it away from direct sunlight and away from any other heat source within the home, such as a radiator. This will prevent premature damage and reduce the possibility of the colors fading. This simple step can straight away ensure that the furniture maintains its new look for as long as possible.

Secondly, as soon as the stain or dirt gets on to the furniture you need to clean it immediately with the correct cleaning fluid. You need to blot the stain to prevent it from becoming ingrained into the material. If you leave it, it will be harder to remove later on.

A third tip is that as the furniture gets used, be sure to help protect it by using table cloths, mats and coasters. This is common sense and will save you a lot of time later on cleaning stains that could have been prevented.

The final stage of the cleaning process is to carry out a regular full clean of all furniture within the home. Typically, it is recommended that you do this every six to twelve months.

You should wash any sofa and cushion pillows as recommended by the manufacturers label and then dust and polish the rest. If you have leather furniture then you need to ensure that whatever you use will not damage the material. Leather is fantastic to have in home furniture and can add vitality to a dull room but keeping them clean can be difficult.

The best advice is to use a soap that is not oil-based. It is important to use natural soaps and avoid chemicals that can damage the material. To begin with you need to test the soap on a small area of the leather that is not visible. If this does not present any problems then apply a small amount of soap to a wet cloth and apply evenly across the surface of the furniture. You should gently massage the soap into the leather but be sure to remove any build up of excess water as this can damage the texture.

Once this is completed, you should remove any soap that remains and wipe the leather with an absorbent cloth.

Upholstery Cleaning ? Keep Your Furniture Cleaner and Maintain Its Beauty

Your furniture plays an important part of the look and feel of your home.  In many cases the furniture in your home has cost thousands of dollars and with proper care and maintenance you can preserve the beauty of your furniture for many years.

Having the right type of fabric on your upholstered furniture can make a world of difference in the durability and cleanliness in its appearance.  When decorating your home it is also important to consider the use the furniture will receive.  If you have a room which will get a high degree of traffic with kids and pets there are certain fabrics that will be more durable as well as keeping their beauty.  If you are decorating a room that will be low traffic and more for entertaining you can choose different fabrics for your upholstered furniture.  You should also be aware that there are certain fabrics more resistant to direct sunlight than others.

Following a regular routine of maintenance with a few simple tips can preserve the beauty of your upholstery for many years.  The most important routine you can follow is to vacuum your furniture regularly.  Dirt comes in your home regularly in the air as well as on clothing worn by other people.  It is impossible to keep it out and even when your furniture isn’t used regularly this dirt will settle on the fabric.  When you sit on the furniture this dirt and grime is ground into the fabric.  The longer this soiling occurs the greater the likelihood of permanent damage.  Regular vacuuming will remove the dry dirt as well as the oily dirt before it gets ground into the fabric.

Clean spots and spills from your upholstered furniture immediately. The longer a stain remains, the harder it is to remove and it can become permanent.  After the spill or spot has been removed use a blow drier on cool to dry the fabric as quickly as possible.  This can prevent the fabric from drying with a ring.  A great way to provide better protection for your furniture is to have Scotchgard added to your pieces.  With this added layer of protection you can keep your furniture looking good and spot free for many years.

If you have heard the saying “an ounce of protection is worth a pound of cure” you will find if you stop eating food on the furniture or drinking, you can decrease the likelihood of getting spills or spots on the furniture.  Developing proper habits helps to maintain the appearance of the furniture.

Turning your cushions once a week and rearranging the furniture will help to maintain the appearance of your furniture.  One of the biggest factors causing damage to you upholstery is direct sunlight.  Prolonged exposure to the sun will break down the fabric, cause fading and possibly show premature wear and tear.

It is impossible to prevent a build up of germs, dirt, sweat, and overall grime on your upholstered furniture.  For this reason you need to have your furniture professionally cleaned every year.  Fabrics on your furniture are more delicate than carpets and it is important not to use the wrong cleaning solutions which can cause permanent damage.  Professional cleaners will make sure there is not too much moisture left in the furniture to develop mold or create any other health problems.  They possess the knowledge needed to keep your furniture in good condition and preserve the appearance.

Developing a regular routine of maintenance and following these tips will add to the life of your furniture and protect you and your family from the accumulation of germs and bacteria while preserving the beauty for many years.

Essential Advice to Keep All your Furniture Looking Great

Whether it’s your two thousand dollar leather couch, the wooden table that once belonged to your great-grandmother, or the plastic furniture on your patio that you use during barbeque season, you want to keep it looking great, and that means keeping it clean. It’s important to know how to care for all types of furniture, because using incorrect products and techniques can leave your furniture looking less than perfect, and you could even damage delicate surfaces like leather if you don’t know exactly what you are doing. Here are some useful tips for cleaning all types of furniture so that it will look great for years to come.
Leather Surfaces

The methods you will use to clean leather depend on whether the material has been treated with a coating to protect it. If not, there are very few options for cleaning this furniture. Never use soap, water, leather creams, or any other type of cleaning product. Instead, dust the material frequently. Because uncoated leather is so hard to clean, and stains often cannot be removed, it may be better to purchase a couch or chair that is coated. In this case, you can use a mild soap mixed with water to remove dirt. Be sure to wipe the soap off the surface and dry the leather right away. Leather cream should be used only a few times a year. As with uncoated leather, no harsh or chemically-based cleaners should be used.
Wood Furniture

Aside from leather, wood is perhaps the most sensitive to damage and staining. Water can be especially harmful to oiled and varnished wood, so if you must use water to clean a spill, ensure that you thoroughly dry the surface right away. The best way to keep wood clean, aside from regular dusting, is by using a polish that is suitable for the type of finish on the furniture, so find out whether the finish is soft, hard, or painted at the time of purchase. For furniture that is not used on a regular basis, it is only necessary to apply polish three or four times a year. Polish should be wiped from the surface before it dries to prevent buildup. If the furniture gets heavy use, it may be necessary to polish more often, and it is recommended that the same type of polish be used each time.
Outdoor Furniture

If you decide to leave your outdoor furniture outside or in a garage during the winter months, spring usually calls for some heavy duty cleaning. For surfaces like cloth chair covers, apply a mixture of dish detergent, Borax, and hydrogen peroxide (if suitable), and water, then scrub the surface before rinsing. Rusted metal surfaces can either be treated with a rust remover or sanded and repainted. Plastics can usually simply be cleaned with a mixture of mild soap and water.
Upholstered Furniture

For regular maintenance, it is recommended that upholstered surfaces be vacuumed and brushed on a weekly basis. To clean stains and upholstered surfaces, the solution you choose should be mild and suitable for the type of fabric you will be cleaning. Apply the cleaner with a brush or damp cloth and remove promptly-usually a minute or two is enough to clean areas that are not stained. The furniture will be somewhat wet, so turn on a fan or open some windows to ensure prompt drying.
Woven Furniture

Furniture made out of natural materials like bamboo is attractive, but many wicker furniture pieces are also very delicate. To clean these surfaces, they can be dusted, wiped with a small amount of water and mild soap, or vacuumed. Many are reluctant to get wicker wet, but the pieces can also occasionally be sprayed down, as long as they are dried with a towel right away and left outside or in a well-ventilated area until completely dry.

Proper Care and Feeding For Resin Furniture: How to Keep Resin Furniture Looking Clean and Comfortable All Year Round

So you have found the perfect resin furniture set to compliment your patio or garden. It is the perfect shape, perfect design, and all at the perfect price. Now, all it needs to do is go in your perfect back yard, to create the perfect outdoor escape.

As time goes on, the perfection of resin furniture is slowly going to wear away. While incredibly durable and able to withstand everything the elements can throw at it, your furniture will eventually get rough. Resin furniture also seems to be a target for stains, collecting dirt and debris as time moves on. What was once a beautiful piece to complete your outdoor paradise will eventually deteriorate without the proper care. Don’t expect your guests to be anxious to hang out in your garden with dirty furniture.

It has been said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. These words ring true for taking care of resin furniture as well. By taking care of your resin furniture a little at a time, you will be working towards keeping it fresh and welcoming for years to come. Further, it will ensure your investment’s protection as the years pass by.

As your resin furniture dirties, it doesn’t take much to keep it clean. In fact, making it look nice year round is as simple as using a mild cleaner and warm water, and simply wiping down your furniture. For light dirt and debris, a mild cleaner will do perfectly. Heavier cleaners can ruin the smooth finish on your resin furniture, causing the plastic to break down and deteriorate your furnishings faster.

The only time you want to use a heavier cleaner, such as a citrus oil cleaner, is for heavy cleaning and discoloration on your resin furniture. As your furniture ages, the color can change from its original healthy color, to eventually grow a yellow tinge across it. This is a natural reaction as the elements beat down on resin – constant exposure to sunlight and heat will cause a yellowing in color. In this case, using a heavier cleaner would help to remove the discoloration, and bring out the original color from deep down in the resin. Heavier cleaners will also help remove stains from your resin as well. However, as this happens, be prepared for the smooth finish of your resin to be removed, leaving a rough feeling in its wake. To avoid the rough feeling, try removing stains and discoloration with a mix of bleach and water. Allow a mixture of 2½ tablespoons of bleach to a gallon of water to soak on stains for at least a half hour. This will preserve the smooth and comfortable finish of your resin furniture.

If all else fails, resin furniture can also be repainted with a mild spray paint. If you choose to go this route, however, be very careful as to what paints you choose. While a mild, non-metallic spray paint will work just fine for your resin furniture needs, harder paints can actually break down the resin itself. The result is deterioration in your resin, allowing weak points in your furnishings, and ultimately breaking the furniture. And always test the spray paint on a small area of your furniture before applying it to the entire piece. By doing this, you will know the end result of the painting, and whether or not it is what you want in the end.

Because of its versatility and availability, resin furniture have many different ways to be cared for. By keeping your furnishings taken care of now, you will have a beautiful product to enjoy for years to come.

Proven Techniques Help to Keep Your Furniture Clean

One of the largest investments you make inside your home is the money you spend on upholstered furniture.  Because your purchase can be final for a long time it is important to choose a fabric that will suit your lifestyle and a style that will make you want to keep the furniture for many years.  Dirt and oils from every day use, direct sunlight, constant wear and tear or kid’s activities such as drawing crayons on the sofa can break down fibers in your upholstery and cause them to fade, look bad and wear out.  Fabrics also hold on to odors so the furniture should be cleaned and maintained not only for it to look its best but also to preserve it and make it last longer. This will help the entire room smell and feel fresher as well as save thousands on furniture replacement.

By developing a regular routine of cleaning and following a few simple tips you can prevent your furniture upholstery from becoming worn, soiled and darkened by grime, grit and spills.  Vacuuming your furniture every week is the most important advice you can follow.  Regular vacuuming will prevent the buildup of dirt and grime as well as prolong the need for a deeper cleaning.

You can keep your furniture looking great by not eating food on the furniture.  It is impossible to prevent spills and drips or stop the kids from wiping their greasy hands on the furniture and by keeping food away it makes it easier to stop the mess.  When spots do appear it is important to remove them as soon as possible using a damp cloth and some mild dish detergent.  The longer a spot remains in the fabric the greater the chance it becomes permanent.

One method of preventing spots from becoming permanent on your furniture is to have Scotchgard applied. Scotchgard will add an additional layer of protection to your furniture making it easier to remove any spots or spills that may occur.  Also Scotchgard prevents the buildup of soil from regular use and this helps to preserve the brightness of colors.

Turning your cushions is another important part of keeping your furniture free of excess wear and tear.  This will make the wear and tear more even and prevents the grime from building up in one area.  Keeping your furniture out of direct sunlight will prevent the fabric from fading and preserve the beauty of your furniture.

All upholstered furniture eventually gets a buildup of cooking odors, pollution from outside or body oils from frequent use.  The only way to properly remove these problems is to have your furniture deep cleaned.  It is important to use a method with low moisture to prevent any damage that can be caused by excessive moisture. And remove any buildup of soiling.  By following a routine of cleaning every 12 to 18 months it will increase the likelihood of being able to maintain the beauty of your furniture.

If you try to clean the furniture yourself instead of having it professionally cleaned it can be a little tricky.  Make sure you only use mild cleaning agents because some fabrics are much more delicate than carpeting.  Some cleaning solution act as bleaching agents and can cause permanent damage to the fabric.  Also excessive moisture can cause mold and mildew issues.  With such a large investment and with the proper care and maintenance you can enjoy the use and relish the appearance of your furniture beyond your expectation.

Cleaning Microfiber Furniture – Tips to Keep it Looking Great

Microfiber is one of the best things to ever happen to the world of home furnishings. Fabrics made of microfiber, the finest fiber known to man, are soft, versatile, light weight and easy to care for. They are sometimes made to look like suede or leather and make very attractive furniture. Since they also have a tendency to repel dust and are hypoallergenic to quite an extent, microfiber is an extremely popular material for upholstering sofas, car seats and chairs. Cleaning microfiber furniture requires special methods because the fabric’s stain resistant properties also make it prone to getting watermarks. Using the wrong cleaning methods and products can result in a breakdown of the microfibers and make your upholstery lose both its resilience and looks. As with any upholstered furniture, if you follow a few simple cleaning tips you will maintain the looks of your microfiber furniture.

Dog and cat hair is the biggest problem with microfiber upholstery. It does not brush off easily. The easiest way to remove cat and dog hair from microfiber furniture is to use a lint roller or a special cloth for removing hair. Microfiber isn’t suitable for long haired pets. Hair and body oils from people and pets stick like glue to microfiber – requiring more agitation and cleaning than most upholstery. Loose dirt should be vacuumed and brushed away before it becomes embedded and harder to remove. Weekly vacuuming or light brushing helps to remove lint, debris, pet hair, soil and prevent the embedding of dirt or grime between the fibers which can increase abrasion and wear.

If something spills onto your furniture, grab an absorbent white terry cloth and blot the stain. Keep blotting until the spill is as dry as possible. Remember not to scrub a spill for the fear of spreading it. Use a mild detergent to wash stains or spots. Use as little liquid as possible and blot at the stain as you go. Even if your furniture is tolerant of water, it is best to use a hair dryer for quick drying of any wet spots to avoid the possibility of water marks. Always keep the dryer on its coolest setting.

You can prevent excessive wear on your microfiber furniture by exchanging cushions wherever possible. People get in the habit of sitting in the same spot and by exchanging or reversing cushions you prevent excessive wear and tear to any one cushion. Keeping your furniture out of direct sunlight will prevent fading or any other damage to the fabric. Also rearranging furniture in a room can be effective in preventing excessive wear patterns as well as fading.

Even if polyester microfiber has excellent resistance to soiling and staining it still has to be deep cleaned every year. Pollution from outside, cooking vapors and greasy fingers will coat the fabric and if they are not removed regularly you will find the microfiber becomes soiled very easily. Do not use a carpet cleaning machine with a furniture attachment on your microfiber furniture. This will cause wrinkles in the fiber and may even cause it to shrink. A low moisture method of deep cleaning is best because it reduces the possibility of doing any damage to your microfiber furniture. Never use nail polish remover, or anything containing acetone, on your microfiber furniture. Don’t use any product containing bleach or a bleach alternative on your microfiber furniture as it may cause discoloration. Because microfiber is synthetic, it has to be cleaned differently. Solvents that will hurt cotton will do nothing to microfiber. However, things that do nothing to regular cloth will damage microfiber. Also, certain chemicals will literally dissolve the chemicals that make up microfiber, so don’t just put anything on your furniture.

Developing a regular routine of maintenance and a few simple cleaning tips will preserve the beauty and elegance of your microfiber furniture far beyond your expectations. You will be very pleased with the results.
