How the Style-Savvy Care For Their Quality Teak Outdoor Furniture
Is teak your patio furniture style? Obtained from a hardwood tree from Southeast Asia’s highlands, teak wood natural properties (it has high oil content) make it a resilient option for furniture. It does not rot easily when exposed to extreme weather conditions. Moreover, teak wood oil prevents degradation by termites and other wood-chomping insects.
Many style-savvy individuals swear by teak garden furniture because it is not only sturdy but beautiful, too – it can look great in many contemporary homes. Teak outdoor furnishings can enhance or look stunning in most gardens or patios. Quality outdoor teak furniture may be on the pricey side, but may last you a lifetime. Whether you opt for a long single bench or a teak duo consisting of two bench chairs and coffee table that can look great in your patio or balcony, teak outdoor furniture has an allure all its own. What’s more, it requires minimal cleaning and maintenance.
Teak furniture has a way of growing old gracefully. It turns into a rich silver-gray patina when left outdoors over a certain period of time. If untreated, it can turn into a dark-gray and greenish appearance. Rest assured that the fading color is not an indication of your teak furniture’s sturdiness or longevity. The wood will slowly transform into a darker shade of brown when left indoors.
Style-savvy folks who prefer its golden honey hue as against distinctive gray can make their teak furniture look good as new by sanding the teak furniture regularly (every quarter). It can benefit from an annual scrub to remove accumulated dirt. All that you need really are warm soapy water (use a mild detergent) and a soft brush. If there are grease spots, gentle scrubbing motion with a degrease agent, to be rinsed off with water, should do the trick. Some teak oil may also slow down the color transformation. Apply the oil using a clean brush, working from the top going down. Have at hand a clean cotton rag to remove excess oil.
There’s no need to be concerned about sitting on your teak furniture after it has been exposed to the sun’s scorching heat for some time, because it is not heat-absorbent.
Other reminders to care for teak furniture and protect the wood’s longevity include making sure that it does not stay for a prolonged period in puddles of water. Teak outdoor furniture may also be covered and protected from harsh weather conditions. Choose a vinyl cover or waterproof canvas to shield your teak outdoor furnishings. The cover will also minimize the possibility of things like bird droppings or tree sap from staining and seeping into the wood. As for stubborn stains created by drinks accidentally spilled on the teak outdoor furniture, a weak bleach and water solution mixed with dish washing detergent may be used.
Definition of no-nos in cleaning your teak furniture pieces are high pressure hoses, and steel wool/steel wire brushes. You would not want any residue left in the grain to discolor the wood. People who are considering to investing on teak outdoor furniture as a charming addition to their homes are bound to discover that with a little tender loving care, it can repay its owners by exuding timeless charm and beauty.

Furniture Care
The Basics
The word “furniture” tends to evoke only thoughts of wood. However, furniture may have components of every conceivable material, including metal, bone, plastic, shell, leather and fabric, as well as paints and natural and synthetic resins. All these materials must be taken into account to properly care for and maintain furniture.
The practice of caring for historic furniture has changed dramatically in the last few years. Until recently, furniture was viewed as primarily functional, and thus it was considered acceptable to repair damaged or broken furniture with whatever means were available so it could be used again. If the paint or varnish was in poor condition, it was routinely removed and replaced with new paint or varnish, or in some cases simply coated with a new layer of finish over existing layers. Today, the monetary, cultural and artistic values of historic furniture demand that the “age old” practices be reviewed.
The environment can have a profound effect on the preservation of furniture.
Light, particularly visible and ultraviolet (UV) light, is very damaging to organic materials such as wood. Damage from light is cumulative and irreversible. A table top exposed to diffuse light for several years will suffer similar effects of light damage as a table top exposed to direct sunlight for a shorter time. Light provides the energy and increased temperature necessary to chemically degrade finishes and wood colorants, and in severe cases, cause the wood cell structure to break down. Clear finishes often turn yellow or opaque in response to light, and the color of the wood itself can also change. The resulting damaged finishes and bleached wood cannot be restored to their original color without stripping and refinishing, a practice not recommended as loss of the “patina” or evidence of use can affect the furniture’s monetary value.
To limit the effects of light, move all furniture out of direct sunlight, utilize blinds or curtains to block the intensity of sunlight and allow it to diffuse evenly throughout a room, and keep lights in rooms turned off when not in use. UV light, which is particularly damaging to wood and fabrics, can be screened out by applying a UV-filtering film to windows.
Furniture can also be affected by the amount of moisture in the air. Wood and other organic materials respond to changes in relative humidity (RH) by expanding or contracting as they try to maintain equilibrium with the moisture in the environment. Ideally, RH levels should be maintained within a 40%-60% range. If the RH is too high (above 70%) wood and other materials expand. If they are constrained in any way, they may split upon shrinking when the RH drops to a lower level. Furniture finishes are also affected as differences between the response of wood and its coating to changes in RH may eventually cause a coating to detach. A prolonged high humidity environment will also promote the possibility of mold growth and insect infestation. To prevent damage, place furniture in areas of minimum temperature and RH extremes, thereby avoiding attics, basements, active fireplaces and heating vents.
Monitoring temperature and RH in an environment can be done with small, inexpensive thermometers and hygrometers purchased at electronic or hardware stores. When necessary, the RH can be modified to stay within acceptable ranges through the use of humidifiers and dehumidifiers.

It is possible to purchase proper leather care kits if you feel it is necessary, but for the average person just a cloth with a little water will do the trick.

Proper Care and Feeding For Resin Furniture: How to Keep Resin Furniture Looking Clean and Comfortable All Year Round
So you have found the perfect resin furniture set to compliment your patio or garden. It is the perfect shape, perfect design, and all at the perfect price. Now, all it needs to do is go in your perfect back yard, to create the perfect outdoor escape.
As time goes on, the perfection of resin furniture is slowly going to wear away. While incredibly durable and able to withstand everything the elements can throw at it, your furniture will eventually get rough. Resin furniture also seems to be a target for stains, collecting dirt and debris as time moves on. What was once a beautiful piece to complete your outdoor paradise will eventually deteriorate without the proper care. Don’t expect your guests to be anxious to hang out in your garden with dirty furniture.
It has been said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. These words ring true for taking care of resin furniture as well. By taking care of your resin furniture a little at a time, you will be working towards keeping it fresh and welcoming for years to come. Further, it will ensure your investment’s protection as the years pass by.
As your resin furniture dirties, it doesn’t take much to keep it clean. In fact, making it look nice year round is as simple as using a mild cleaner and warm water, and simply wiping down your furniture. For light dirt and debris, a mild cleaner will do perfectly. Heavier cleaners can ruin the smooth finish on your resin furniture, causing the plastic to break down and deteriorate your furnishings faster.
The only time you want to use a heavier cleaner, such as a citrus oil cleaner, is for heavy cleaning and discoloration on your resin furniture. As your furniture ages, the color can change from its original healthy color, to eventually grow a yellow tinge across it. This is a natural reaction as the elements beat down on resin – constant exposure to sunlight and heat will cause a yellowing in color. In this case, using a heavier cleaner would help to remove the discoloration, and bring out the original color from deep down in the resin. Heavier cleaners will also help remove stains from your resin as well. However, as this happens, be prepared for the smooth finish of your resin to be removed, leaving a rough feeling in its wake. To avoid the rough feeling, try removing stains and discoloration with a mix of bleach and water. Allow a mixture of 2½ tablespoons of bleach to a gallon of water to soak on stains for at least a half hour. This will preserve the smooth and comfortable finish of your resin furniture.
If all else fails, resin furniture can also be repainted with a mild spray paint. If you choose to go this route, however, be very careful as to what paints you choose. While a mild, non-metallic spray paint will work just fine for your resin furniture needs, harder paints can actually break down the resin itself. The result is deterioration in your resin, allowing weak points in your furnishings, and ultimately breaking the furniture. And always test the spray paint on a small area of your furniture before applying it to the entire piece. By doing this, you will know the end result of the painting, and whether or not it is what you want in the end.
Because of its versatility and availability, resin furniture have many different ways to be cared for. By keeping your furnishings taken care of now, you will have a beautiful product to enjoy for years to come.

The Care for Antique Furniture
Now-a-days furniture manufacturers use variety of materials and chemicals while designing furniture in order to make furniture user friendly in regular use.
The maintenance for the historical and valuable antique furniture requires extra effort and method of care for such furniture is being changed accordingly. The carelessness in maintaining such furniture will effect on future value of such pieces.
General Things to Be Taken Care for Antique Furniture
• Avoid furniture being exposed to sunlight.
• The furniture should not be placed near air conditioning and heating vents.
• Immediately bolt up spills.
• Dust regularly using lint free cloth.
• Avoid placing furniture near stoves and fireplaces.
Furniture should not be exposed to direct sunlight as UV or ultraviolet rays would damage the antique furniture. Sunlight can degrade the furniture and will result in damage of wood and fabrics. Curtains or shades would be the better option to block sunlight. Furniture being exposed to sunlight can turn yellow or opaque.
The antique furniture should be kept away from fireplaces, stoves and air conditioning vents because the heat may cause shrinking which will loosen the glue joint, veneers, inlays and marquetry. The amount of moisture in the air is also responsible to harm the furniture. Change in relative humidity leads the furniture to expand first and then contract. This expansion and contraction leads to breakage, difficulty in dragging doors and drawers or get stuck while opening. The use of dehumidifier can minimize the effect of moisture and can prevent the furniture.
Wood furniture can get spoiled by water spots, finger marks and scratches. Water spots and finger marks can be removed by using wet cheese cloth and rubbing on spots or marks. If paper is stuck to wood it can be removed using linseed or sweet oil, soak the paper in oil for bit and then rub it. Do not try to scratch the paper it will spoil the furniture.
There are varieties of products available in market for the protection of the furniture like waxes, polishes, oil treatment. Waxes and polishes keep the furniture long lasting and it is coming in the form of paste or liquid. Oil treatment is used to remove dirt and dust. It is of two types, orange oil and lemon oil. Orange oil is used on any finish product to remove every day dust. Lemon oil is used to remove strong dirt and grime.
The most elegant type of furniture is leather furniture which requires extra effort to take care. Leather furniture should be cleaned using soft cloth and should be vacuumed with soft brush in order to retain its quality. Regular cleanliness will hold the value of the furniture and will look great.
Last but not least I would like to conclude that- Getting expensive furniture is not where your job get over, maintaining those furniture is the main job to keep the furniture long lasting. It could be said that beautiful house is of no use without the proper furniture.
