Man, I just read exactly what you were looking for at the doctor’s office this morning in one of their waiting room magazines. Be damned if I can remember which one though, I read so many.

Most work by bleaching the surface or the teeth, but the bleaching agents can be harsh on your surrounding gum tissue.

Most of the stain removers use some type of hydrogen peroxide. Usually the professional version just have a higher percentage concentration of peroxide. The peroxide oxidizes the stains and lifts them from your teeth over time. Crest Whitestrips and other professional brands use something called Carbimide Peroxide usually in 6% concentration.
