Obviously I don’t mind what packing I have to do, but I want to know whether I can just leave things for them or whether they’ll expect a certain amount done by the time they get there.
I did this once. The WILL pack everything. They even packed ashtrays with cigarette butts. The only thing I will tell you is that they won’t insure anything you pack, that they move. We took our clocks and some valuable antiques, and left the rest to them.
If you pack your own clothes and linens, and leave them for the movers, you will save money. Depnds on what you want to do.

You leave the large, heavy items to them. Small and fragile items, you should pack yourself. If you don’t pack the small and fragile items, there may be a surcharge for them to do these. Its best to watch and observe them. I use to be a mover, and when the owner wasn’t looking, we’d drag and mishandle the item, then later claim the damage was already there when we picked it up.
Make sure the moving company had been in business for a number of years. New, untested companies often generate a lot of complaints because of their inexperience. Here’s a link to research and see if there were pass complaints on any company you’re considering to hire.

Depends on what you want to pay we did a move some years ago and paid for prepackaging it was fantastic as they had portable robes so nothing got to crushed.
We unpacked at the other end I wish now I had let them do it as it took me 6 months to get sorted out.
Just make sure you have the electric kettle coffee and tea milk sugar maybe some nibbles they will appreciate that and be sure you have it ready at the other end as well oh don’t forget the cups like my grandson did recently lol
